Green and sustainability efforts
2009 has been a wonderful year for our efforts to build a business that gives back to our environment as much as our environment has given to us. A few of the steps that we were able to achieve this year were: We changed our sales fleet vehicles from large Dodge V-8 engines, to smaller economic and fuel efficient 4 cylinder trucks. This will reduce emissions and lower our gas consumption. We have changed our watering system. Instead of relying 100% on the water provided by our local city, we built a chain of ponds that captures the water run off from our crops. It is then filtered through the chain of ponds as its pumps from pond to pond. This allows us to put less stress on the local water system and lakes. It also returns clean water into our irrigation system. While this was a significant cost to our company, we feel that the effects to our environment will be felt by generations to come. We know that this is a huge effort in becoming sustainable. We remodeled our cold storage facilities with new refrigeration units, new metal roofing and re-insulated the buildings. The money that we spent to do these things will allow us to reduce our drain on the electric grid. Sexton Nurseries currently has over 500,000 square feet of greenhouse space. The plastic used to cover these buildings is removed and replaced every year. For the first time we began a recycling effort. All the plastic was removed and taken to a recycling facility. We are currently working to recycle wood used in pallets and shipping racks.
As you can clearly see, we are working hard to have a positive impact not only today but for many generations to come. Sexton Nurseries truly does care about the earth we live on, your families and ours. |
